It bears the legend “Chart of the Head of Yellow Stone” and indicates the locations of volcanic activity, hot springs. Drawn in ink on a pale blue-gray background, it is filled to two edges of the paper.

This map includes on the North the sources of the Upper Athabasca River, including the upper reaches of the North and South Branches of that River; on the West, the Colombia River basin as far West as the 121st Meridian; i.e., to a point West of the John Day River and East of Des Chutes River; on the South, the Snake River, tributary of the Colombia, to a line almost as far South as the Northern boundary of Nevada and Utah; on the East, the territory almost as far East as the 111th Meridian, hence, the Upper Missouri West and South of Fort Benton. The Great Divide runs, roughly, from the Southeast to the Northwest corners of the Map. It is drawn in several colored inks on an ivory background, and is filled to the edges. It is dated between 1842 and 1848, and, although some aspects of the map are geographically inaccurate, it does include accurate plots of Indian villages and campsites, missions, forts, trails, hot springs, mountain ranges, watersheds, and tribal boundaries.
