Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Pierre-Jean de Smet (1801-1873) was a Belgian Jesuit who came to Missouri in 1823. In 1838, De Smet traveled across the western United States, then considered the wilderness of the expanding country. He journeyed the territories of the future states of Iowa, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and South Dakota and visited Native American settlements. The De Smetiana map collection consists of 41 individual maps categorized as 38 maps, and depicts a variety of locations in the upper Midwestern United States, such as the Yellowstone River, the upper Missouri River, and Spokane River among other locations. The maps also show river courses, Native American settlements, United States military installations, and other landmarks in the American West.

Description
An account of the resource
This map includes on the North the sources of the Upper Athabasca River, including the upper reaches of the North and South Branches of that River; on the West, the Colombia River basin as far West as the 121st Meridian; i.e., to a point West of the John Day River and East of Des Chutes River; on the South, the Snake River, tributary of the Colombia, to a line almost as far South as the Northern boundary of Nevada and Utah; on the East, the territory almost as far East as the 111th Meridian, hence, the Upper Missouri West and South of Fort Benton. The Great Divide runs, roughly, from the Southeast to the Northwest corners of the Map. It is drawn in several colored inks on an ivory background, and is filled to the edges. It is dated between 1842 and 1848, and, although some aspects of the map are geographically inaccurate, it does include accurate plots of Indian villages and campsites, missions, forts, trails, hot springs, mountain ranges, watersheds, and tribal boundaries.

An account of the resource
This map is labeled “Carte des rivières et Fourches du Haut l’Attabasca et de la Branche du nord du Haut Sascatshawin.” Drawn circa 1846, with colored ink on an ivory background, it charts part of a journey by De Smet across the Canadian Rockies, where he hoped, in vain, to find the Blackfoot Nation.
